DUNKELPEK RELEASE FIRE'S HUSH
February 4, 2022 (Los Angeles, CA):
Today DunkelpeK release their debut album Fire's Hush, a journey into the elusive dreams and subliminal echoes of our deeper mind and mystery of the heart. With the album release comes a video for "Unknown Memory" made by Jakob Pek. Listen/purchase Fire's Hush HERE watch the video HERE.
DunkelpeK is Japanese-born percussionist Nava Dunkelman and Canadian-American guitarist Jakob Pek. This iconoclastic duo creates experimental, improvised music that reimagines sonic possibilities. Rhythmic, visceral, organic, and spontaneous in nature, DunkelpeK’s sound transfigures and transmutes, offering listeners a holistic exploration into the essence of listening.
“Fire's Hush is our first studio album after nearly 10 years of making music together. Our performances are often long, sonic journeys that take the listener to far out extremes and to multiple, distant worlds,” states DunkelpeK. “We wanted Fire's Hush to showcase these distinct sonic worlds and extremes of emotion, all while weaving them together into a holistic experience of sound and feeling.”
Nava Dunkelman is a Tokyo-born percussionist and improviser based in Brooklyn, NY. Her musical approach is innovative and dynamic, combining virtuosity and intuition. Meticulous in an intrinsic way, she uses her distinctive sound palette to explore and give life to a vast spectrum of musical possibilities. After moving to America at 18 years old, Nava enrolled in the music program at Humboldt State where she studied under Eugene Novotney. She transferred to Mills College where she studied percussion under the tutelage of William Winant as well as improvisers Fred Frith and Zeena Parkins, among others.
Nava's other current projects include electro-percussion experimental noise duo IMA, with Amma Ateria, and percussion duo NOMON with her sister Shayna Dunkelman. She also has performed and collaborated with Fred Frith, John Zorn, Meredith Monk, William Winant, Ikue Mori, Brandon Seabrook, Angélica Negrón, Pauchi Sasaki, and gabby fluke-mogul. She has performed classical and contemporary pieces with the William Winant Percussion Group, Joan Jeanrenaud, San Francisco Girls Chorus, and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players.
Jakob Pek is an improviser, multi-instrumentalist, visual artist, writer, and educator based in Berkeley, CA. His work is improvisational and experimental in nature, interweaving familiar worlds with uncharted domains of abstraction and discovery.
Jakob has performed with some of the living luminaries of contemporary musical improvisation such as Fred Frith, William Winant, Theresa Wong, Arrington De Dionyso, and many others. Some of his most formative mentors include W.A. Mathieu, Roscoe Mitchell, and Pauline Oliveros. He received a M.A. in Musical Performance and a M.F.A. in Composition from Mills College. His musical work has been described as "otherworldly" and "a force of nature.” Much of his current work is focused on bringing together the disparate worlds of prepared/free-improvised guitar with the tradition of solo, fingerstyle jazz playing.
In addition to music making, Jakob is an avid visual artist, painting both large and small works in the abstract. He is scheduled to take part in an arts residency at Chateau d’Orquevaux in rural France in the fall of 2022.
