Walker assembles different combinations of artists - whether musicians, designers, filmmakers, or sculptors - to collaborate with on various projects. The work, overall, encompasses experiments in film, records, installations, sculpture, photography, and even virtual reality. One of the studio's primary processes, which has resulted in the Changing Landscapes series, is for Walker and collaborators to set up camp in a particular locale, observing and collecting sounds and ideas to be reprocessed through creative reinterpretations of those locales - whether the Scottish Isle of Eigg, an Iowa farm, or a copper mine in Chile.

In the case of that Chilean mine, the resulting recording is Changing Landscapes (Mina Las Pintadas), an enthralling record of pulsing and psychologically exploratory songscapes. Deep grooves tunnel through tones and sonic textures, following subterranean and psychic pathways, alternately narrowing and widening while heavily processed flute treads over aesthetic stepping stones like Jon Hassell and Holger Czukay. While lengthy stretches of the record are decidedly mellow - soft cymbal hits, a cooing sax, gentle guitar work - the record also contains a rollicking twin of free expression juxtaposed throughout. The record’s A-Side is punctuated as four distinct movements over a single take and is driven by this twinned energy. It also reflects a mission statement of sorts for the group’s approach to improvisation and life; while each movement stands on its own, they collectively triumph in the company of their neighbors. The record's B-Side further distills the emboldened trio's approach across three distinct movements reflecting a growing embrace of the sonic vacuum that electronic music depends on (the loop-oriented “need buy in”), a heaviness that the trio's 2024 live record Zebulon! unlocked (lead single “FRACTAL HASH”), and an outstretched and unhurried melodic ambience (the 12-minute album closer “trackerKeeper”).

Movements gather texture; melodies yearn from Harrington’s guitar and find their companions in electronic sputters filling the cracks in Jaffe’s drum kit; Shiroishi’s magisterial sax passionately cries out and whispers in coded bits and bytes; the alchemy of this trio bends time to create a new musical language. In their ever-evolving performances, the overlapping timelines of each musician build into a dense and kinetic chorus that retains its nuance as it grows in immensity (the editing and mix was done by Jaffe and the mastering by Harrington, and many of the bold musical swings that set Making Colors apart from its predecessor take place in these post-production realms, where things like nuance and immensity are truly determined for the listener).

The swell recedes as elegantly as it appeared, with only colors left in its wake.

All music by Dave Harrington, Max Jaffe, Patrick Shiroishi
Dave Harrington: guitar, organ, electronics
Max Jaffe: drum set, sensory percussion, gongs, effects
Patrick Shiroishi: alto saxophone, electronics, iphone

Recorded on April 2, 2024 at 64 Sound in Los Angeles, CA
Engineered by Tyler Karmen
Mixing and additional production by Max Jaffe
Mastered by Dave Harrington
Artwork by Winnie Harrington
Photos by David Haskell
Layout by Matthew Sage

AKP047

Tracklisting:

1. Slowly and gently layered with sparse overdubs – yearning slide guitar, accordion, clarinet, recorder, delicate synthesizers – and sateen production treatments, the core of the album is a series of first take live improvisations with Prymek on electric guitar and Sage on piano. The album feels like sitting on a porch with an old friend and a warm cup of coffee while you catch up and talk about the good and the bad with a smile. Gentle and hymn-like, deeply melodious and patient. From her early Buchla performances in the late 1960s to her 2018 release LIVE Quadraphonic, Ciani has treated space as a primary compositional parameter. Working alongside immersive producer KamranV, Ciani continues to explore immersive sound as both artistic and human gesture. Kamran’s decades of work in spatial formats, converge here in service of a singular goal: to let sound behave as it does in the physical world. “For both of us, quad is musical,” Kamran notes. “The way Suzanne works, quadraphonic is nested in — not the technology per se — but the intent you bring to the work.”

The recording stands as a meditation on legacy, evolution, and the enduring dialogue between technology and human expression. The live album captures the electricity of performance, the immediacy of touch plates under Ciani’s hands, the collective of musicians responding in real time, and the audience’s shared immersion in quadraphonic-inspired space.

CIANI/ORKEST is released by Atmospheric/AKP Recordings/CyKiK in multiple double-disc quadraphonic 12” Record packages designed by grammy-nominated designer Rebeka Arce: Lenticular Gatefold, 52-Page wooden agamograph-cover Book written by Jessica Hundley + designed with Knowhow Shop & a Bespoke, one-of one lacquer cut by Scott Sedillo at Bernie Grundman Mastering with in a custom Marquetary box designed with Mouret Lejeune.
