"I’m not sure I ever fully understood what community was until I became an adult. A family, a home, a culture, have all taken on meandering definitions in my life. Where Inheritance explored themes of the past and the moments that led up to my my life today, I am so humbled to share Inheritance • Remixed today, which pulls upon huge musical inspirations of mine to help paint a clearer picture of today." Following last year’s breakthrough debut Inheritance comes a diverse, and overflowing album of reimagined and reinterpreted compositions by friends and artists who have influenced Omar Ahmad's work, past and present.
Inheritance • Remixed stretches a new canvas to capture the intimate reflections shared by its remix artists in response to Inheritance's universal themes: ancestry, intergenerational trauma, identity, and loss. These themes became more topical in the aftermath of October 2023 as Kirin McElwain shares “The original track’s tongue-in-cheek commentary felt unbearably heavy given the genocide we were witnessing unfold in real time, and the discord between the western media perspective and the video and photos coming out of Gaza.”

Featuring remixes spanning contemplative longform ambient, experimental global club, contemporary classical, and high energy breaks, these refreshing reworkings both mirror and amplify the emotional peaks and troughs that gave rise to Inheritance. “I found the link woven in the seams of both Palestinian and African Diasporas,” reveals ACE, “not in suffering - but our shared ability to overcome colonial horrors through music and a fiery joy that cannot be extinguished.”
The remix roster includes veterans Sam O.B. (Astro Nautico, Bastard Jazz), Tammy Lakkis (Portage Garage Sounds, NPR Best Songs of 2021), Ki Oni (Bandcamp Best Ambient), Solpara (Other People), Otodojo (The Bunker, Microtones), and more. The mixes were brought to life and mastered by Russell Butler, a prolific artist and staple of the NYC electronic scene.
“The remix process deals with inheritance,” shares Tammy Lakkis. “You don’t start with a blank slate as you do with other tracks: you inherit color, textures, feelings, words, vibes, and stories to work with.”
